What is GIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a collection of computer hardware, software, and geographic data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information (Source: GIS.com)

Pend Oreille County GIS

The mission of Pend Oreille County GIS is to aid county services in the development and maintenance of the county’s GIS database. The county utilizes the data to generate maps and perform various types of analysis. Pend Oreille County GIS also handles addressing.

Geographic data and maps can be downloaded from this site and/or from other specific county websites as they become available. All data are projected into NAD 1983 HARN StatePlane Washington North FIPS 4601 Feet with US Survey Foot units. Currently file formats include ESRI ArcGIS shapefiles (.shp/.shx/.dbf) only. These files may be contained within WinZip compressed files (.zip) and include standard metadata and projection files. Text files (.txt) of the metadata can also be downloaded. If you can’t find the data that you want please contact us.

Addressing and Road Naming

Addresses are assigned by the GIS Division of the Information Technology Services Department. In keeping with its large rural population, Pend Oreille County uses a branch system rather than the grid system used in more urban locales, each new branch representing a new road.

The numbering system is based on the 100th of a mile, the last digit representing the Left(Odd) or Right (Even) side of the road and the number itself representing the distance from the beginning of the road. For example, an address of 1121 would be located 1.12 miles from the beginning of the road, on the left.

Accurate addressing is important for many reasons but especially so in the event of an emergency. If you suspect your address may not be accurate, i.e., your address indicates you are living on the main (trunk) road but you actually live on a branch road, please contact us for an accuracy review.
